Transforming Lives
We've all seen and heard about the marvels of plastic surgery to correct defects, restore lost function and generally improve appearance. And studies show that more people had cosmetic plastic surgery last year than ever before. The physicians who practice these wonders have their own reasons for choosing this specialty— we recently spoke to some of the top plastic surgeons in Southeastern Wisconsin to find out why they do what they do.

Harvey M. Bock, MD,
Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Specialists, Wauwatosa
"There is nothing more fascinating to me than plastic surgery," said Dr. Harvey
M. Bock. "During the years I spent in general surgery after medical school, I was drawn to plastic surgery. You get so much positive energy. You can see how it changes a patient's self-image in a positive way," explained Dr. Bock, who received his BS Degree from the University of Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin Medical School, then interned at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago and completed his plastic surgery residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals.
"When I started out 26 years ago, I did a lot of reconstructive surgery. Now, I do mostly cosmetic surgery," Dr. Bock said. And, while cosmetic surgery means face-lifts and breast augmentation, it could also mean correcting the protruding ears of a child, which can be a life-altering correction. "If you can help them, you have really changed their life," he added. Over the years, Dr. Bock has donated his skills to repair the cleft lips and palates of children who come to the U.S. from other countries. "These children could not get the kind of care they need in their own country," he said. He also donates his time to uninsured burn patients who require surgical reconstruction.
Dr. Bock and his wife, Maris, met in junior high school and have four children as well as five grandchildren. A former runner, he now prefers the calmer sport of golf. "At this stage of my life, it's interesting to look back at all of the developments that have occurred in plastic surgery. But I also look forward to continuing to learn and incorporate the newest techniques within this practice. I have two young partners and it is great to work with them and watch them grow," he added. "I think I am motivated by the ability to make people better with my individual effort. I think plastic surgery is the ultimate instant gratification."
