As we age, our faces begin to show the effects of volume loss, increased skin laxity,
gravity, sun damage, and years of facial muscle movement. The underlying tissues
that keep our skin looking youthful and plump begin to deteriorate -- often leaving
frown lines, crow's feet wrinkles, nasolabial folds, thin lips, radial lip lines, marionette
lines, perimental hollows, a pre-jowl sulcus, as well as other lines. Facial volume loss
is primarily seen as a result of fat atrophy and bony resorption. Skin laxity results
from the breakdown of collagen and elastin and the loss of other essential skin
components such as hyaluronic acid. The restoration of fullness and the
improvement of these lines and wrinkles can often be achieved nonsurgically with
injectable fillers (often called soft tissue fillers or dermal fillers).
Soft Tissue Augmentation with Injectable Fillers
Injectable fillers can soften facial lines and creases, enhance the lip margin, plump
thin lips, restore cheek fullness, improve the tear trough and other aging contours of
the face, and smooth the appearance of some depressed scars. Soft tissue fillers
can produce a marked improvement in facial fullness and a more youthful appearance.
The results are immediate with essentially no down time. The most popular injectable
fillers are based upon natural substances derived from the human body; some are
synthetic forms of these substances (Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Ultra Plus, Perlane®, and Restylane®), and others contain synthetic, biocompatible compounds
(Radiesse®). The differences in fillers vary not only in their composition but also in their
preferred application and the duration of their results.
Soft-tissue fillers, such as collagen, hyaluronic acid, synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite, and poly-L-lactic acid, can soften facial lines and creases to restore a smoother, more
youthful-looking appearance. When injected beneath the skin, these fillers can enhance
the lip margin, add a fuller more sensuous look to the lips, improve cheek fullness and
cheekbone definition, and fill aging contours of the face. According to The American
Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 1,487,037 injectable filler treatments were
performed in the US in 2008; 1,262,848 of which used a hyaluronic acid product, making
this the second most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure. Injectable fillers may be
used in conjunction with other procedures such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or DYSPORT®,
Fraxel® or Pearl® Fractional laser resurfacing, FotoFacial rejuvenation, laser genesis,
skin tightening, chemical peels, or aesthetic surgical procedures.
Facial rejuvenation is very individualized. Effective and safe use of BOTOX and soft tissue fillers requires a physician with specialized training and a thorough understanding of facial anatomy; an experienced physician will recommend appropriate treatment with BOTOX and the proper filler(s). It is important to discuss your expectations with a board-certified plastic surgeon that has experience with many types of non-surgical facial procedures. Your doctor will help you select a treatment option based on your goals, your anatomy, and your lifestyle. At Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Specialists our physicians perform all the BOTOX and soft tissue filler injections, ensuring that your treatment is the very best.
