ALLERGAN LAUNCHES PREVAGE™ MD ANTI-AGING TREATMENT CONTAINING THE MOST POTENT ANTIOXIDANT AVAILABLE IN A SKIN CARE PRODUCT

More than 70% of patients surveyed reported a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in four weeks
IRVINE, Calif. - September 21, 2005 - Allergan, Inc. today announced the launch of its newly formulated PREVAGE™ MD anti-aging treatment, which contains a clinically tested antioxidant shown to help correct the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and protect against environmental factors including sun damage, air pollution and cigarette smoke. PREVAGE™ MD contains the highest concentration (one percent) of idebenone, the most potent antioxidant currently available in a skin care product.

The new formulation of PREVAGE™ MD contains an enhanced base which leaves the skin feeling immediately smoother and softer. The base includes a skin barrier-strengthening complex, which allows idebenone to work more effectively and restore skin function. The new formulation also includes green tea, a proven antioxidant.

"PREVAGE™ MD contains a powerful antioxidant proven to produce results in as little as four weeks, which is a priority for many patients who want quick results," said Doris Day, M.D., Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the New York University Medical Center. "I also find that it works well as part of a daily skin care regimen and in concert with cosmetic procedures."

Scientific Data
The one percent concentration of idebenone found in PREVAGE™ MD anti-aging treatment is scientifically shown to be more effective than other topical antioxidants in protecting skin against environmental stressors known to cause skin aging. Idebenone was found to be more effective than other antioxidants, including: kinetin (Kinerase®), coenzyme Q10 (Q10 Plus Wrinkle Control products from NIVEA®), lipoic acid (N.V. Perricone M.D. Cosmeceuticals®), vitamin C, and vitamin E.1

In a recent clinical trial with 17 participants, patients found that PREVAGE™ MD reduced the signs of skin aging in just four weeks. Seventy-two percent of patients reported a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and 78 percent reported an improvement in skin softness and smoothness.
    After eight weeks of product use, the following were observed2:

  • 86 percent reduction in skin roughness and dryness;
  • 75 percent increase in skin firmness; and,
  • 59 percent improvement in overall appearance.
"PREVAGE™ MD offers a novel topical anti-aging treatment for men and women that can be easily integrated into one's overall skin regimen," said Bob Rhatigan, Vice President of Allergan's U.S. Dermatology business unit. "Given the critical role of aesthetic-specialty physicians in helping people maintain optimal skin health, PREVAGE™ MD will be made available through dermatologists and plastic surgeons who can assess individual skin types and offer appropriate skin care regimens based on the patients' treatment goals."

PREVAGE™ MD anti-aging treatment is available exclusively through dermatologists' and plastic surgeons' offices without a prescription.

A different formulation produced by Elizabeth Arden, containing 0.5% of idebenone, will also be available under the name PREVAGE™ and will be distributed through prestige retail outlets nationally.

Allergan selected Elizabeth Arden as a partner for its established leadership in innovative skincare and retail presence, and the two companies are collaborating to make the PREVAGE™ brand more broadly available.

About Idebenone
When compared to other topical antioxidants available in skin care products, idebenone is the most potent and effective antioxidant compound. Idebenone has been found to be effective in protecting the skin against key environmental stressors known to cause fine lines and wrinkles, including ultraviolet radiation, ozone, air pollution and cigarette smoke. It also was ranked the most effective compound tested in a series of biochemical and cell-biological methods to determine the effectiveness of antioxidant compounds at helping to prevent biological damage as a result of oxidative stress.

A close relative of the compound co-enzyme Q10, idebenone has a sixty percent lower molecular weight, and allows for greater skin penetration, a higher oxidative stress protection capacity, and extended shelf life stability.
